Ways to prevent car theft
We depend on our vehicles to get us to where we need to go fast. In fact, we spend so much time in our vehicles that it can be an easy place to keep some of our belongings. What do you keep in your vehicle? Maybe most importantly, where do you keep it? These are important questions because in many criminals are opportunistic. If they see an opportunity, or your GPS unit, they’ll act. Here’s what you can do to prevent this from happening.
How to protect your car from criminals
Two the easiest things you can do to prevent criminals from breaking into your vehicle is to lock the doors and hide or remove your valuables. Maybe most importantly, be consistent. Criminals are looking for an easy opportunity to make some money and having your valuables – or any indication there are items of value inside – is just what they want. Whenever you leave your vehicle, it’s important to remove or store these items in the trunk or glove compartment:
- Purses or bags of any kind
- Electronic devices (cameras, smartphones, GPS units, etc.)
- Credit cards
- Cords and mounts for electronic devices (includes GPS window mounts)
- Radio faceplate (if have aftermarket audio system)
Have pets or small children? It’s important to bring them with you when you leave the vehicle or leave them at home. When pets and children are left alone in a vehicle there is no one there to protect them from criminals.
