It’s no surprise that Knoxville, TN car shoppers looking for a three-row model are in need of massive amounts of storage and interior passenger space. However, choosing such a large vehicle can come with some drawbacks like seriously high fuel costs. To help lower three-row SUV fuel costs, Toyota created a hybrid configuration of their most popular three-row model: the Toyota Highlander.

The 2018 Toyota Highlander Hybrid offers the same interior space and many of the same features as the traditional 2018 Toyota Highlander model, but with better fuel economy scoresSUV owners that do a lot of daily driving or take frequent trips on the weekend may be interested in the fuel savings, though the starting costs will likely be a little higher than comparable 2018 Highlander models with traditional gas-only engines.

Powertrain Specs and Fuel Economy

The 2018 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is offered in four trim levels. Each trim comes standard with the same hybrid powertrain that combines a 3.5-Liter V6 gas engine and an electric battery. The 2018 Highlander Hybrid will run on the electric battery whenever possible and will seamlessly switch to the V6 engine when the electric battery runs out of juice or you need extra power for passing on the highway.

The hybrid powertrain on the 2018 Highlander Hybrid is rated at an impressive EPA-estimated 30 miles per gallon in city driving and 28 miles per gallon on the highway. Traditional 2018 Highlander models are rated at an EPA-estimated 21 miles per gallon in the city and 27 miles per gallon on the highway. While 2018 Highlander Hybrid owners should see fuel savings across the board, drivers who do most of their hauling in the city will see the largest fuel-saving benefits.

While fuel savings was the main priority in the 2018 Highlander Hybrid, it still retains the full functionality of a three-row SUV. The 2018 Highlander Hybrid offers seating for seven or eight passengers depending on trim just like the traditional 2018 Highlander and can tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped.
